Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga is a dynamic process of inquiry by a man who dedicated his entire life to exploration.

This intelligent and transformative form of yoga was devised by BKS Iyengar and is accessible to anyone and is complementary to other styles of yoga, many yoga teachers use Iyengar Yoga to enhance their own practice. A regular practice  systematically cultivates strength, flexibility, stability, suppleness, stamina and awareness. The focus on precise alignment  improves posture, concentration and quietens the mind to promote wellbeing. Practising yoga positions (asana) with awareness has an intergrating effect and works to harmonise mind and body providing a complete and practical approach to life.

Iyengar Yoga is a highly-developed teaching methodology that includes clear demonstration of the postures, precise use of language and specific instructions and individual adjustments (where necessary) to develop students’ understanding of the  actions in the practice.

He set the standard for his teachers and students while his textbooks on yoga have become classics. He set up the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India, where his daughter Smt. Geeta and son Sri Prashant Iyengar are directors.

Triumphing over poverty and serious childhood illness, B. K. S. Iyengar began his study of yoga at a young age with his guru, T. Krishnamacharya. Practicing hour after hour, year after year, he acquired the encyclopedic knowledge, which fired his teaching.

When I practise, I am a philosopher; when I teach, I am a scientist. When I demonstrate I am an artist.
